Most assumed the Pelicans were dead in the water with all of the drama surrounding the team and Davis playing sparingly. The playoffs might not be in their future, but they are still capable of reeling off a few upsets and shaking up the postseason picture before sailing into the offseason sunset. One of those upsets occurred on Saturday night against the Nuggets, who are ranked behind the Golden State Warriors with the second-best record in the Western Conference.
Davis was scratched from the lineup, and the Pelicans were down by 12 points on the road. They could have easily folded early in the game and rushed off to hit the showers, but they fought their way back into the contest and eventually took the lead. Granted, they still gave up 27 points off 21 turnovers, but given their circumstances, it was truly a special effort from the Pelicans against one of the top teams in the league.
They out-rebounded the Nuggets and finished the game with a 48.9 field goal shooting percentage. Jrue Holiday led the team with 29 points, three rebounds, five assists and three steals, while Julius Randle dropped 28 points, 10 rebounds and four assists in the 120-112 victory.
Jazz coming to life at the right time
Donovan Mitchell went toe-to-toe with “The Greek Freak” Giannis Antetokounmpo and lived to tell the tale of an offensive shootout for the ages. There was never a doubt that Mitchell’s professional career was headed in an upwards trajectory, but his performance on Saturday night was truly a coming-out-party for a future superstar in the league for many years to come.
On the same night Antetokounmpo scored 43 points, Mitchell exploded for 46 points, three rebounds, six assists and two steals. That monstrous performance helped the Jazz overcome a 17-point lead in the fourth quarter to knock off the No. 1-ranked Eastern Conference team.
Mitchell wasn’t the only Jazz player worthy of recognition after the game. Forward Derrick Favors also had a big night by going 10-of-12 shooting from the floor for 23 points and grabbing 18 rebounds. His ability to step up on a night where center Rudy Gobert went 2-of-9 shooting and failed to find any offensive rhythm played a significant role in the Jazz coming away with the upset win, 115-111.
